Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has established the MOL Charitable Trust in Mauritius “as part of its benevolent and philanthropic actions to support activities for the public benefits of Mauritius and its people to address the impacts of the oil spill” to mitigate the damage caused by spilt bunkers when the bulk carrier Wakashio grounded on the island nation's coast in July 2020.

Trafigura commits to 25% cut in emissions intensity
Singapore-based commodity trader, and major shipping and bunker markets player, Trafigura has announced a target to reduce the intensity of its total shipping emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to an IMO 2019 adjusted baseline.
The target encompasses over 70% of Trafigura’s reported Scope 3 emissions in 2020 and will see the emissions intensity profile of the Group’s owned and third-party leased shipping fleet decline by 48% compared to the 2008 IMO industry baseline.

Monjasa’s cargo/bunker tanker for W Africa
Oil and shipping group Monjasa has bought the 25,117 dwt, 2005-built tanker Neste, now renamed the Monjasa Trader, for use as a combined cargo and bunker vessel for its West Africa operations.

Oil major BP is to supply VLSFO and MGO at Auckland, New Zealand.
It will use the bunker barge Awanuia, owned by Ports of Auckland subsidiary Seafuels, to re-enter the New Zealand market. The New Zealand-flagged vessel can deliver 2,900 tonnes of fuel oil and 600 tonnes gasoil at the same time.

Indonesian domestic shipping to keep using 3.50% sulphur
The Indonesian government has announced it will not enforce the 0.50% sulphur limit on its domestic shipping fleet.
Indonesian-flagged ships will be allowed to continue to use 3.50% sulphur fuel without the use of scrubbers. An official from the country’s Ministry of Transportation said that the cost of doing so would be too high. He was quoted by Reuters as saying: “We always put forward national interest as consideration in making the decision.”

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has revoked Southernpec’s bunker supplier licence after the company’s employees were found to have
“engaged in bunker malpractices, which include the use of magnets to interfere with the mass flow meter during bunkering operations”.
New Malaysian bunker hub planned
Malaysia’s Johor Port Authority (JPA) is planning a RM2 billion ($477 million) oil storage and bunkering facility within Tanjung Pelepas Free Zone.
The idea of a bunkering hub at Johor, dubbed Bunker Island, that could rival Singapore has been around for a long time, at least 17 years, but JPA now appears to have firm plans for a facility on Tanjung Bin Island, using 100 acres of reclaimed land.

The average number of spills greater than, or equal to, 7 tonnes in size has continuously reduced and, since 2010, averages around seven per year. For ‘large spills’, of greater than 700 tonnes, the yearly average, which was around 25 in the 1970s has reduced dramatically to less than two since 2010.
